The short answer is yes. But understanding why can help you make that decision with confidence rather than uncertainty.
A lot of people are not sure whether their accident was serious enough to warrant professional care. They feel sore but functional, and they assume that if nothing is broken, rest is probably enough.
That assumption is one of the most common reasons straightforward injuries become long-term problems. Here is what you need to know to make an informed call about your own situation.
The body responds to traumatic events with a surge of adrenaline and cortisol. These hormones suppress pain signaling for hours or days after the event.
This is why so many people walk away from a crash feeling shaken but manageable, only to wake up the next morning barely able to turn their head.
The injury was there from the moment of impact. The pain just had not arrived yet.
Soft tissue injuries, disc injuries, and nerve compression do not produce immediate dramatic symptoms the way a fracture does. They build. And the more they build before being addressed, the harder they are to resolve.
If you went to the emergency room after your accident and left without a fracture diagnosis, that is good news. But it is not the same as being cleared.
Emergency rooms are designed to rule out life-threatening injuries. Broken bones, internal bleeding, head trauma. Once those are ruled out, the work is done from an ER perspective.
What an ER does not assess is joint function, spinal alignment, soft tissue integrity, or nerve involvement. These are exactly the things a car accident most commonly damages, and exactly what a chiropractic evaluation is designed to find.
Muscles, ligaments, tendons, and spinal discs are not visible on standard imaging. A normal X-ray after a collision tells you there are no fractures. It says nothing about the soft tissue damage that accounts for the majority of car accident injuries.
A hands-on chiropractic evaluation assesses what the imaging cannot.
Some symptoms are clear signals that something needs attention. If you are experiencing any of the following after a collision, do not wait.
An evaluation is still worth it.
The purpose of a post-accident chiropractic evaluation is not only to treat existing pain. It is to identify structural changes that may not yet be producing symptoms but are progressing underneath the surface.
Restricted joints, early disc compression, and postural shifts caused by the impact can all be identified and addressed before they develop into the chronic pain that many accident victims are still dealing with years later.
Finding nothing significant is also a legitimate outcome of an evaluation. It gives you documented confirmation that your spine came through the collision in good shape, and that peace of mind has real value.
The first visit is an evaluation, not an adjustment. Dr. Heaton reviews your accident details, your symptoms, your health history, and any imaging you have from the ER or urgent care.
A physical examination follows. Posture, spinal alignment, range of motion, joint function, and neurological signs are all assessed.
From there, a care plan is built around what was actually found. Depending on the nature of your injuries, that plan may include any combination of the following:
In most auto accident cases, yes.
Arizona is a fault-based insurance state. The at-fault driver's liability coverage is responsible for your medical care, and chiropractic treatment is a covered form of care under most auto insurance policies.
Your own policy may also include personal injury protection that applies regardless of fault. Arizona Chiropractic & Spine Rehabilitation works directly with auto injury cases and can help clarify how your coverage applies before your first visit.
As soon as possible, ideally within the first 72 hours.
This is the window when injuries are most responsive to treatment, before inflammation has peaked, before scar tissue begins to form, and before the nervous system establishes compensation patterns around the injury.
If it has been longer than that, come in anyway. Recovery is still very possible. The timeline just needs to be adjusted.
If you were in a collision and you are wondering whether it is worth getting checked, the answer is yes.
The cost of an evaluation that finds nothing significant is an hour of your time. The cost of not getting evaluated when something was wrong can be months or years of chronic pain that was entirely preventable.
For auto accident chiropractic care in Tucson, Dr. Heaton will tell you clearly what he finds, what he recommends, and whether your case needs treatment. There is no pressure and no obligation to continue care beyond what makes sense for your situation.
