If you have never been to a chiropractor before, or never been to one after a car accident specifically, it is normal to feel unsure about what to expect. The good news is that the first appointment is straightforward, and a little preparation goes a long way toward making it faster and more productive.
Here is everything you need to know before walking into Arizona Chiropractic & Spine Rehabilitation for your first visit.
Coming in with the right information saves time and helps Dr. Heaton build an accurate picture of your situation right away.
Comfortable, loose-fitting clothing makes the physical examination easier and more accurate.
Avoid stiff jeans, tight dresses, or anything that restricts movement in your back, hips, or shoulders. Athletic wear or casual clothing works well.
If your neck or upper back is involved, wearing a shirt with a relatively open neckline helps the examination of the cervical spine go more smoothly.
New patient paperwork takes time. Arriving 10 to 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment means you are not rushed, and your appointment starts on time rather than running late before it has even begun.
You can also ask whether forms are available to fill out in advance. Completing them at home, where you can think clearly and look up details, is often easier than filling them out in a waiting room.
Knowing the structure of the visit removes the uncertainty.
Health history review. Dr. Heaton will go through your accident details, your symptoms, your medical history, and any prior injuries. Be as specific as you can. Details that seem minor to you can be clinically significant.
Physical examination. This includes a postural assessment, range of motion testing in the neck and back, palpation of the spine and surrounding muscles, and neurological checks if nerve involvement is suspected. Nothing about this examination is painful, though some areas may be tender.
Review of any imaging. If you brought X-rays or scan reports, Dr. Heaton will review them as part of the evaluation.
Care plan discussion. After the examination, Dr. Heaton will explain what he found, what it means, and what he recommends. You will leave with a clear understanding of your injuries, the proposed treatment approach, and a realistic timeline for recovery.
Sometimes, but not always. It depends on what is found during the examination and how your body is presenting that day.
Some patients receive their first adjustment at the end of the initial visit. Others need a visit or two of assessment and preliminary treatment before an adjustment is appropriate. Either way, you will always know what is happening and why before anything is done.
This sounds obvious, but people often downplay their symptoms, either because they do not want to seem dramatic or because they are not sure which symptoms are relevant.
Everything is relevant. Headaches, dizziness, hand numbness, trouble sleeping, jaw tension, difficulty concentrating — these are all things Dr. Heaton needs to know about.
Symptoms that seem unrelated to the accident often are related. The more complete the picture you provide, the more accurate the care plan.
Chiropractic care after a car accident is a process, not a single event. Some patients feel meaningful relief after the first or second visit. Others improve more gradually as the underlying inflammation settles and the structural work accumulates.
What you should expect from day one is clarity. A clear diagnosis, a clear plan, and clear communication about how your recovery is progressing at every visit.
