How to Prepare for Your First Auto Accident Chiropractic Appointment in Tucson, AZ

If you have never been to a chiropractor before, or never been to one after a car accident specifically, it is normal to feel unsure about what to expect. The good news is that the first appointment is straightforward, and a little preparation goes a long way toward making it faster and more productive.

Here is everything you need to know before walking into Arizona Chiropractic & Spine Rehabilitation for your first visit.

Gather Your Accident and Medical Information Beforehand

Coming in with the right information saves time and helps Dr. Heaton build an accurate picture of your situation right away.

  • Date, time, and details of the accident. How it happened, the direction of impact, whether you were braced or caught off guard, and whether you were wearing a seatbelt. These details matter clinically, not just legally.
  • A list of your current symptoms. Write them down before you come in. Include when each symptom started, where exactly you feel it, what makes it better or worse, and whether it is constant or comes and goes.
  • Any imaging or medical records from the accident. If you went to the ER or urgent care after the crash, bring copies of any X-rays, CT scans, or discharge paperwork. If you do not have copies yet, at minimum bring the name of the facility so records can be requested.
  • A list of current medications and supplements. Include dosages if you know them. Some medications affect inflammation and healing in ways that are relevant to your care plan.
  • Your insurance information. If you are using auto insurance or workers' compensation, bring your policy details and the claim number if one has been assigned. The front desk can help clarify how your coverage applies.
  • Any prior history of back, neck, or spine problems. Injuries or conditions that existed before the accident are relevant. Dr. Heaton needs to know what is new versus what may be a pre-existing issue that was aggravated by the crash.

What to Wear to Your Appointment

Comfortable, loose-fitting clothing makes the physical examination easier and more accurate.

Avoid stiff jeans, tight dresses, or anything that restricts movement in your back, hips, or shoulders. Athletic wear or casual clothing works well.

If your neck or upper back is involved, wearing a shirt with a relatively open neckline helps the examination of the cervical spine go more smoothly.

Arrive a Few Minutes Early

New patient paperwork takes time. Arriving 10 to 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment means you are not rushed, and your appointment starts on time rather than running late before it has even begun.

You can also ask whether forms are available to fill out in advance. Completing them at home, where you can think clearly and look up details, is often easier than filling them out in a waiting room.

What Actually Happens at the First Appointment

Knowing the structure of the visit removes the uncertainty.

Health history review. Dr. Heaton will go through your accident details, your symptoms, your medical history, and any prior injuries. Be as specific as you can. Details that seem minor to you can be clinically significant.

Physical examination. This includes a postural assessment, range of motion testing in the neck and back, palpation of the spine and surrounding muscles, and neurological checks if nerve involvement is suspected. Nothing about this examination is painful, though some areas may be tender.

Review of any imaging. If you brought X-rays or scan reports, Dr. Heaton will review them as part of the evaluation.

Care plan discussion. After the examination, Dr. Heaton will explain what he found, what it means, and what he recommends. You will leave with a clear understanding of your injuries, the proposed treatment approach, and a realistic timeline for recovery.

Will I be adjusted on the first visit?

Sometimes, but not always. It depends on what is found during the examination and how your body is presenting that day.

Some patients receive their first adjustment at the end of the initial visit. Others need a visit or two of assessment and preliminary treatment before an adjustment is appropriate. Either way, you will always know what is happening and why before anything is done.

Be Honest About Everything You Are Feeling

This sounds obvious, but people often downplay their symptoms, either because they do not want to seem dramatic or because they are not sure which symptoms are relevant.

Everything is relevant. Headaches, dizziness, hand numbness, trouble sleeping, jaw tension, difficulty concentrating — these are all things Dr. Heaton needs to know about.

Symptoms that seem unrelated to the accident often are related. The more complete the picture you provide, the more accurate the care plan.

Do Not Expect an Instant Fix

Chiropractic care after a car accident is a process, not a single event. Some patients feel meaningful relief after the first or second visit. Others improve more gradually as the underlying inflammation settles and the structural work accumulates.

What you should expect from day one is clarity. A clear diagnosis, a clear plan, and clear communication about how your recovery is progressing at every visit.

Questions Worth Asking at Your First Visit

  • What did you find in the examination and what does it mean?
  • Which of my symptoms are likely related to the accident?
  • What treatments do you recommend and why?
  • How long do you expect recovery to take?
  • What can I do at home between visits to support my recovery?
  • Are there things I should avoid doing while I am in treatment?
  • How will we know if I am not progressing as expected?
